The Book

Living the Scene

2005–2023 – Flyers, Collages, and Stories from My Life in the Independent Music Scene

Living The Scene is a memoir spanning two decades, offering a vivid window into my life as the owner and on-air personality of Official FN Radio and my involvement in the global independent music community from 2005 through 2023.

While a huge part of this book celebrates the vibrant Connecticut underground, it also tells the larger story of connecting bands from across the U.S. and around the world. It’s packed with stories, photos, broadcasts, and reflections, capturing the passion, chaos, creativity, and community that fueled an enduring cultural movement. It’s also the story of a music fan with far too much time on his hands and a deep love for the scene that raised him.

To tell this story the right way, I dug through:
• 15.7GB of photos and flyers
• 202GB of OFNR radio archives
• 238GB of live show broadcast recordings

I really appreciate this book. It’s such a great scrapbook of the history of some of the greatest years in the Connecticut music scene. Even though I wasn’t heavily involved in the metal scene during those years, Living the Scene captures that history beautifully.

After reading Living the Scene, I want to thank Bob Marino, not just as a musician, but as a friend and brother. Over the past 17 years, I’ve experienced some severe highs and lows, especially in the last six. Reading this book reminded me that through it all, it was worth it.

I hope everyone in the Connecticut metal scene, and their loved ones, reads Living the Scene and comes away with the same feeling of self-worth that I did.

We all matter.

Thank you, Knob. ❤️

This amazing documentary captures OFNR’s role in the Connecticut music scene for almost two decades. The sheer amount of information in this book amazes me! It’s a hoot to see shows that I played or attended, as my social life pretty much revolved around playing in bands and going to shows at that time.

Kudos to Bob for completing this monumental endeavor!

It’s very awesome! I missed out on a chunk of the Connecticut music scene after my kids were born and my family became my priority. It’s so cool to revisit those memories and celebrate the scene I’ve grown to love through the pages of Living the Scene.

Very grateful for all the work that went into putting this together!
